A day in Anchorage
There are plenty of interesting things to do and see while in Anchorage. If you can swing it, a visit to the local craftsman market is a great opportunity to ditch the gift shops and see and buy Native Alaskan goods like Ulus, knives, fur goods, art food and local goods. It is only open on Saturday and Sunday but well worth a visit if you are in town. Located in the parking lot between the mall and Walmart. Also, you might take a trolley tour of the city and hear local stories of historical nature....some quite amusing. The local musuem located downtown is a must see, offering many exhibits of native Alaskan life and history. Finish this with a viewing of the Northern Lights show in the theater....Spectacular
Toured the Turnagain Arm today. The weather was rather cold, wet and bleak so the pictures are a little gloomy. Visited Portage glacier and creek. Took some photos of black and grizzly bears. Also visited flat top for panorama views of the Anchorage Valley. The storey has it that when Captain Cook arrived in what is now Anchorage looking for passage thru America to the Atlantic Ocean he sailed up the Turnagain arm. After discovering this wasn't the passage he seemed he turned around again. Hence the name. Turnagain.
The first two pictures are of the harbor at Valdez. The trip into town was a little disappointing. The musuems are quite interesting and worth visiting. The shopping/harbor area is better suited for those wishing to take fishing or sightseeing charters.
I enjoy Skaqway quite a bit. Form here you can take a very scenic train ride to the Klondike. Well worth doing. It's a beautiful 4 hr train ride. The town isn't too big and is very walkable. There are many tourist shops to visit and some old west activities. From here yoou may take the train ride on the Wite Pass Railway through some very beautifu Mountain passes up to White Pass. Then a coach ride back to Skagway for even mor spectacular scenery. Highly reccommend this tour.
The Capitol of Alaska, Juneau is a city of less than 35000 people. There are many things to do in this area including boat trips to glaciers and whale watching. If you are cruising you can probably see as many whales from your balcony as you will on a whale watching tour. A van tour to Mendenhall Glacier is always a good trip with most tours offering side trips of botanical gardens or city tours included. It is also a good place for a pub crawl if you are so inclined.
Ketchikan is a great place to just wander around. There is plenty to see here in town. Walk up to creek road and visit the old redlight light district and stroll down Married Mans Walk next to the creek. At times seals can be spotted here. If a tour is what you have in mind a nice van ride down the coast to the wildlife viewing area might get you a sighting of a bear of bald eagle. On the way back you might visit Saxmans Totem village. Back in town some fish and chips at one of the local eateries is a good bet.
